I was 18 years old when I first boarded a plane for a foreign destination. Born and raised in South Africa, that first trip to Europe opened my eyes to a whole new world of beautiful scenery, astounding history and interesting people.
Since then, I have tried to visit a foreign country at least once a year and have travelled through most of Europe, visited Singapore and Thailand, and braved Mozambique, Zanzibar, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Tanzania on my home continent. While saving up for these exotic overseas holidays, I try to visit a few local destinations and play at being a tourist in my own amazing country.
A few things you may not know about me:

- I have two university degrees (a BA in Publishing and a BSc in Information Technology) and am currently doing a postgraduate honours degree in English Studies with English literature as the main focus.
- When I was little I wanted to be a private investigator, like Nancy Drew. Then I wanted to be a writer (I still do!), decided to become an editor but couldn't find a decent job, so nowadays I work as a solution architect for an IT company that specialises in business process management.
- I met my husband, Gareth, when I was 18 years old while taking latin & ballroom dancing classes. We still go dancing every Tuesday night, more than a decade later.
- My favourite book is Lord of the Rings and, not surprisingly, I tend to read fantasy almost exclusively. I'm waiting with baited breath for the last installment of the Wheel of Time series.
- I used to play way too much Everquest, and later Everquest 2, although these days I mostly indulge in the Sims 3 when I should be reading up on Chaucher or writing blog posts instead.
- Apparently I'm not the only person with an irrational fear of frogs (ranidaphobia). I'm also not overly fond of small spaces.
- I listen to Classic FM when I'm driving.
- I'm an only child, so if I seem a little self-involved, blame my parents! In my experience only children are either boisterous attention seekers or painfully shy. I tend to fall into the latter category and only really open up to someone once I know them pretty well. This does not make for great conversations with random strangers and making small talk is one of my personal versions of the nine levels of hell. I'm pretty chatty on Skype instant messaging though.
- My home language is Afrikaans, but I speak English fluently and have a little bit of German and French from my university days. I try to learn important phrases and to count to 100 in the languages of each country that I visit.
- I'm a bit of a history buff and since I can't really go see the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World anymore, I'd like to visit the New 7 Wonders of the World instead. So far the only one I've been to is the Colosseum. You can find my travel bucket list here.
