Wandering in Windermere

England’s Lake District is well-known for its beautiful countryside scenery. This is where the Romantic poet Wordsworth wandered lonely as a cloud and where Beatrix Potter dreamed up stories that still delight children of all ages. And it’s also where Gareth and I decided to break our journey from Cardiff in Wales to Aviemore in Scotland. We stayed in a lovely little guesthouse called Kay’s Cottage just off the main street in Windermere, the quaint little town nestled on the banks of the lake with the same name.

We arrived late afternoon on a rainy day. After our hostess showed us to our comfortable room, furnished with all sorts of thoughtful little gifts, we headed out to explore.

The town isn’t big, but it’s perfect for an evening stroll and actually quite pretty at night with streetlights illuminating old buildings juxtaposed with flashy new cars. We had dinner at The Lighthouse restaurant, and from our second-storey seats we watched the flow of traffic through this popular little tourist town.

There was just enough time the next morning to go down to the lake. The sky was overcast and it drizzled ever so slightly, but that didn’t deter us. We spent about an hour or so admiring the scenery and taking pictures of the swans and ducks.

We would have loved to take a boat cruise out onto the lake, but unfortunately it was time to head out again. As we set out in the rapidly expanding mist, we vowed to spend more time in this pretty little town when next we visit England.
